Happy Mother's Day!

Wow, aren't mothers amazing?  I mean, without them, we certainly wouldn't be here today.

At church our pastor asked, "What is Mother's Day?" A little boy raised his hand and said, "a day to honor mothers".  Isn't that neat?  Although my dad still claims Mother's Day is actually all about Hallmark cards, I still think this holiday is pretty cool, as long as we truly honor mothers and don't get caught up in buying last-minute gifts or cards.

I adore my mom.  She's so amazing - brave, godly, funny, cool (yes, my mom is very cool!), friendly, patient, kind, etc.  I also love my birthmother, even though I don't remember her, because: despite China's one-child policy (and a preference for boys), she chose not to abort me but left me in a place where I would be found.  I was taken to an orphanage and my mom and dad adopted me and took me to America!  Now I understand that not everyone has a wonderful mother, and some mothers have abused their positions.  But in the ideal family that God created, mothers are pretty cool.  :)

During the service, I suddenly wondered, as our society grows more and more selfish, and more and more anti-life, will there ever be a day when mothers will cease to be honored? Will there ever be a day when mothers with children will be looked down upon, when large families will be thought of as a strain on the environment or because people are worried about overpopulation?  I sincerely hope and pray that this day will not come to pass.

The Bible says:

Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." (Genesis 1:28, NKJV)

God created families.  He commanded us to be fruitful and multiply.  The world needs Christians to share Jesus' good news with the world.  But if there are no children, then what will happen to the next generation?

I love what Sarah Mally says in her book, Before You Meet Prince Charming.  "Our culture, driven by the modern feminist movement, is pressuring us as girls to be successful in the world's eyes, get graduate degrees, be independent, move up in the business world, have small families, and do men's work.  This standard of success that the world pushes does not even compare to the calling God has for our lives as wives and mothers.  God made us to be helpers to our husbands and to bear and train little ones for the kingdom of God.  This is far more important and fulfilling than any career could ever be."  Now I'm not here to discuss feminism (and neither was Sarah Mally), nor are Sarah and I trying to tell you whether or not to go to college.  That's not the point of the quote.  It's just a reminder of how amazing God's plan for Biblical women is!  If you disagree about the roles / jobs of men and women, or have questions about this...  let me know!  I'm considering posting more about the feminism movement in the future.

Anyway, I want to say a big THANK YOU to the godly mothers out there, and to those young people who are embracing God's calling for women to be wives and mothers.  Of course I don't know what God has planned for me - maybe I won't get married.  But if I do, I hope to be a godly mother who has a quiver full of arrows (Psalm 127:4-5).

Happy mother's day!

  1. What a thoughtful and thought full post, Kara! Tied in with our pastor's sermon this morning about godly women ( as opposed to about the Hallmark holiday). Thank you for sharing your sometimes very adult thoughts.........love reading this. May God continue to bless you as you blog and share your life.

PS>......did you know that I have a greatnephew adopted from Siberia? And they are going back asap ( that means as soon as they get a referal) to bring home another son. I get to see little Benjamin ( 3 1/2 ) tomorrow, for an hour or two and am excited. His mom just posted a bit ago about being thankful for his mother today, just as you did! Neat. Hugs....the other Linda S. in Wis.

  2. Wow. Thanks for sharing. That situation must be really hard for you in some sense when you remember your life before adoption, but in another way I'm sure it allows you too see God's grace and compassion towards you throughout your life. You've certainly encouraged my faith on the BRC. Your life is a testimony of Jesus Christ. Thanks, Kara!:)

    1. Hey Poparock!
Thanks so much! Well, I don't actually remember my life before I was adopted, since I was adopted at 11 months. But I do know how I was left in a box and found, and then chosen to go to Mother's Love Orphanage where my parents adopted me. But because I know this, I can def. see God's grace and compassion and awesomeness! Thanks so much - you encourage me too! Love ya!
